Shade
What is Shade?
Shade is a self-help group for men and women who suffer with depression and anxiety. The group provides a safe, supportive, respectful place to meet and talk with others who have depression. You do not have to explain anything, or be told to ‘pull yourself together’ because quite simply, if you could, you would.
When do you meet?
The group meets twice-weekly in Danygraig Church Hall in Risca; Tuesday evenings from 7pm – 9pm and Thursday afternoons from 1pm – 3pm. There is no charge to join, just come along.
What does Shade do?
The group was started in 1999 by a church member who suffered with depression. Agape initially helped with this and has continued to support the work we do and prays for the leaders and members. Sometimes people from Shade have asked for prayer, or we can offer prayer as encouragement from the church. Agape sees this as practical help that can be offered to the community and as a proactive ministry of the church.
We meet for an informal chat and coffee, giving everyone an opportunity to speak if they wish to and say how they are feeling – a chance to tell their ‘story’. People are able to share their experiences, learning from and helping each other. Sometimes we go out for a meal, or have a quiz or games evening, we often invite speakers to hold talks on depression or other topics, always keeping it relaxed and adding an element of fun!
There are no ‘professionals’ there to give opinions, just others in the same situation as you – if it is necessary to speak with doctors or psychiatrists about changes to medication we can point you in the right direction and invite referrals from health professionals, social services and voluntary organisations.
Some people who come to the group have been attending for several years and see it as an invaluable support structure. Members have previously commented that “Shade is my lifeline”, “Without Shade I might not be here.”
